Protect yourself and your wallet from being taken advantage of.

Scamming numbers are up this year, and scammers target everyone, especially travelers. According to USAToday, the FTC says COVID-19 related scams have cost Americans over $13.4 million dollars so far this year.

We’re sharing 5 insider tips that will help you know exactly what to look out for. Scroll down to stay safe from scams while you travel.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=”” row_type=”row” use_row_as_full_screen_section=”no” type=”full_width” angled_section=”no” text_align=”left” background_image_as_pattern=”without_pattern”][vc_column][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]

#1 In the late night hour

It’s 1AM, you’re half asleep and the phone in your hotel room rings.

“Hi, this is the front desk. Sorry to bother you. There has been an issue with your credit card and we just need to confirm the number…” If it sounds fishy, it probably is. Be wary of late-night phone calls from the “front desk” to your hotel room requesting any sensitive information.

How to avoid it – Don’t hesitate to ask questions to confirm who you are speaking with, and opt to visit the front desk directly if sensitive or personal information is required.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]

“According to online fraud statistics from the consumer credit reporting company Experian, 40% of consumers across the world have been targeted at least once.”

#2 Excuse me, what’s the WiFi password?

Have you ever seen a WiFi network that says “free” in the name?

Don’t be fooled, it might cost you in other ways. You could be logging in and having your personal data compromised right under your nose.

How to avoid it –  If you’re at a hotel or restaurant, be sure to ask a staff member what their preferred network for guests is.

#3 Under-the-door-menus

One large inconvenience with a side of scam coming right up!

It’s not uncommon for restaurants to provide copies of their menus for hotel guests’ convenience, and when your stomach is growling, boy does that menu come in handy. While a food menu sounds harmless, you might actually be calling an illegitimate establishment waiting for you.

How to avoid it –  Before ordering delivery, do your research to make sure the restaurant is accredited. Look for a website, reviews, or see if they are listed on a delivery services’ site.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_column_text]

#4 Keep your numbers off the network

IT Support called – they said the refrigerator in your hotel room is running and you better go catch it.

Not really. But an alleged “IT Support” person might have called the hotel front desk. Remember, hotels are not immune to scams either. Some have fallen victim to having their login information compromised by scammers who access the property’s network. If you recently sent your personal information to the hotel via email, consider yourself at risk as well.

How to avoid it –  Don’t submit credit card information via email or through an unsecure site.

#5 “Could it be under another name?”

Online travel agencies can get really great deals on hotels and flights!…but it can be quite embarrassing when you arrive at the airport or hotel and they can’t find your reservation. What’s worse is when they’ve got your reservation, but they’re actually overbooked, leaving you to fend for yourself.

How to avoid it – If you have any doubts, confirm your arrangements by contacting the airline or hotel directly to verify the details of your reservation. Be sure to keep a copy of the hotel/flight-issued confirmation number. Lastly, don’t walk away until you’ve asked what options you have – Can they put you on another flight? Can they arrange for you to stay at a sister property?[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_separator type=”normal” color=”#4a0d66″][vc_empty_space height=”50px”][vc_column_text]
